Inclement Weather Policy

In case of inclement weather in any of the three Counties that make up the Nantahala Regional Library, our Region has adopted this policy. It is our hope that this will help our patrons know in advance whether or not a particular Library in our Region will be open or closed when there is bad weather. The goal of this policy is to keep our patrons and our library staffs safe when bad weather conditions occur. Our Inclement Weather Policy is as follows:

Four Libraries in our Region

Graham County Public Library - The Graham County Public Library will follow the same schedule as the Graham County offices. If the Graham County offices are closed or delayed, the Graham County Public Library will be closed or delayed as well.

Moss Memorial Library - The Moss Memorial Library will follow the same schedule as the Clay County School System. If this System is closed or delayed, the Moss Memorial Library will be closed or delayed as well.

Murphy Public Library - The Murphy Public Library will follow the same schedule as the Town of Murphy offices. If the Town of Murphy offices are closed or delayed, the Murphy Public Library will be closed or delayed as well.

The NRL Headquarters - The NRL Headquarters will follow the same schedule as the Cherokee County School System. If this System is closed or delayed, the NRL Headquarters will be closed or delayed as well.

The Andrews Public Library - The Andrews Public Library will follow the same schedule as the Town of Andrews office. If they are closed or delayed, then the Andrews Public Library will be closed or delayed as well.

*** If the school systems are closed because of holidays or breaks, then we will follow the same procedure as we would on Saturdays. If inclement weather occurs after schools are closed for the day, then we will follow the same procedure as we would on Saturdays.

Saturdays

Whether or not the four Libraries in our Region are open on Saturdays when inclement weather occurs is left to the discretion of the Branch Librarian. Patrons are always encouraged to call the library before venturing out. If the library is closed, no one will answer the telephone if it is during normal business hours.

Preschool Storytime

The Youth Services Librarian follows the same schedule as the Cherokee County School System. If Cherokee County Schools are closed or delayed, preschool storytime is cancelled. If Cherokee County Schools are open, the Youth Services Librarian will follow the same schedule as the school system in which storytime is being held. For example, if Cherokee County Schools are open but Graham County Schools are closed or delayed, storytime is cancelled for the Graham County Public Library.

Bookmobile

The Bookmobile follows the same schedule as the Cherokee County School System. If Cherokee County Schools are closed, the Bookmobile route will be cancelled. If Cherokee County Schools are delayed, the Bookmobile route will be delayed. If Cherokee County Schools are open but Graham County and/or Clay County Schools are closed, then the Bookmobile will not run on that particular day.

**** This policy is a general outline. Its intent is not to anticipate every scenario that might occur if or when inclement weather hits our area. All decisions as to whether or not a library will be closed, a program will be hosted, or a service will be provided is left to the discretion of the Nantahala Regional Library Director, in consultation with the Branch Librarian and/or Department Head. At no time will a library in our Region be open if two staff members are not available to get to work on a particular day because of bad weather.
